- SING the spelling to a favorite tune
- DANCE while singing the spelling
- AIR WRITE the spelling with "strong arms and 2 fingers pointing" (your child should know how to do this from working with me!)
- AIR WRITE the spelling with your toes while lying on your back
- AIR WRITE the spelling with other body parts -- head, elbow, knee, etc.
- TRACE the word in salt, sand, pudding or yogurt on a plate or tray. Use fingers or a utensil.
- BUILD the word with play dough, modeling clay or wiki stix
- PAINT the word with water on the sidewalk or with paint on paper
- WRITE the word with sidewalk chalk
- RAINBOW WRITE the word by tracing over it multiple times with different colored markers or crayons.
- TRACE AND CLEAN! Rub shaving cream or a squirt of liquid soap onto a window or mirror. Trace the word with a wet finger or paintbrush, then wipe away the soap or shaving cream with a damp cloth.
- WRITE the word with bar soap on a window or mirror, then scrub away with a damp cloth.
If you are reading this, your child may have an IEP goal regarding High Frequency Words. We use Fry's list because it is a list of the most commonly used words in English, in order. The grade level expectation is that by the end of first grade, a student will be able to read the first 100 words, by the end of second grade, the second 100 words, etc. Click the links below for printables for first, second, and third grade words!
