5 Minutes a Day - High Frequency Words Practice

The best way to help your child learn high frequency words, sometimes called trick words or red words, is to make it fun and to use multiple senses. The more senses you can engage in the activity the better! Choose just a couple words to focus on at a time. Start by saying the word and having your child repeat it. Ask them to spell it out loud. If they don't know how to spell it, show them the word and have them spell it out loud while looking at it. Practice spelling it in one or more of these ways:

  • SING the spelling to a favorite tune
  • DANCE while singing the spelling
  • AIR WRITE the spelling with "strong arms and 2 fingers pointing" (your child should know how to do this from working with me!)
  • AIR WRITE the spelling with your toes while lying on your back
  • AIR WRITE the spelling with other body parts -- head, elbow, knee, etc.
  • TRACE the word in salt, sand, pudding or yogurt on a plate or tray. Use fingers or a utensil.
  • BUILD the word with play dough, modeling clay or wiki stix
  • PAINT the word with water on the sidewalk or with paint on paper
  • WRITE the word with sidewalk chalk
  • RAINBOW WRITE the word by tracing over it multiple times with different colored markers or crayons.
  • TRACE AND CLEAN! Rub shaving cream or a squirt of liquid soap onto a window or mirror. Trace the word with a wet finger or paintbrush, then wipe away the soap or shaving cream with a damp cloth.
  • WRITE the word with bar soap on a window or mirror, then scrub away with a damp cloth.
